Two classic British documentaries. Director John Grierson's 'Drifters' (1929) looks at the North Sea herring fleets, and helped define the nature of British documentary realism for a generation. Filming at sea in all weathers, Grierson also used studio sets to enhance the documentary experience. 'Caller Herrin'' (1947) by director Alan Harper follows the herring fleets from the coast of Shetland and explores the scientific developments of fish processing.
