Set in Prague in 1994, Jan Svankmajer's updating of the Faust myth uses stop-motion animation for both his puppets and humans to tell the story of a bewildered, ordinary man manipulated into exchanging his soul for pleasures and enlightenment. A businessman finds a street map and follows it into an ancient courtyard. When he investigates a cellar he finds a scorched copy of Goethe's 'Faust' and also the costume for the play. Trying them on he is himself transported into a surreal, circular, everyday world where everything is just beyond comprehension until, eventually, he becomes a marionette and loses his life.
