In London, 1837, Swiss governess Elisabeth (Sophie Marceau) spends three nights of passion with aristocrat Charles Godwin (Stephen Dillane) for the sole purpose of bearing him a child. An attraction nevertheless develops between them, but Godwin then disappears from her life, and Elisabeth is forced to give up the child after it is born. Seven years later, Elisabeth tracks down her daughter, Louisa (Dominique Belcourt), now living with Godwin, who is working as a sheep rearer, and his invalid wife. Godwin employs Elisabeth as Louisa's governess, and a bond slowly develops between mother and child.
