Drama based on an early novel by playwright Arthur Miller, which examines anti-Semitism in American society towards the end of World War Two. Lawrence Newman (William H. Macy) is a timid executive unable to speak out in a culture of prejudice and racism. At work he is pressured into not hiring Jews; at home he witnesses a brutal attack on a Hispanic woman in his neighbourhood, and colludes with the persecution of the Jewish news-vendor on his street. Unwilling to speak out, Newman is forced to reassess his apathy and passivity when he falls in love with Gertrude Hart (Laura Dern), a young Jewish girl who applies for a job in his office. In doing so, however, he risks inciting the hatred of his colleagues and his neighbours.
