Pier Pablo Pasolini's film, starring the famed Italian comedian Toto, is structured as a parable within a parable - a father and son wander the country accompanied by a talking crow, who espouses Marxist philosophy. This narrative encloses another, the religious conversion of hawks and sparrows by two of St Francis' followers.
