Rifat Bey is a retired though still prominent high court Turkish judge, who is planning to move to a rest home in Istanbul. During a police raid on the opposite apartment block, Rifat meets a five-year-old Kurdish girl called Hejar, whose entire family was killed during fighting in their small village in the south east of the country. The old man takes the youngster under his wing and attempts to integrate her into Turkish society.
