In the Himalayan village of Dolpo, aged chieftain Tinle (Thilen Lhondup) learns that his eldest son, Lhakpa, has just died while leading the Yak caravan through the mountains. Tinle accuses Lhakpa's replacement, Karma (Gurgon Kyap), of causing his son's death, and the the latter rajects the old man's authority, refusing to wait for the auspicious day set by the oracles and leading the caravan off at once. A few days later, Tinle sets out with his second son, Norbou, along with Lhakpa's widow and son, determined to overtake Karma and reassert his leadership.
