Successful copywriter Gordon Cromstock (Richard E. Grant) shuns an offer of promotion and gives up his job to become a poet. His girlfriend, graphic artist Rosemary (Helena Bonham-Carter), cannot understand Cromstock's determination to embrace poverty, nor his obsession with the aspidistra as a symbol of respectability.
