Kuhle Wampe Film Poster

The only Communist film to emerge from Weimer Germany, 'Kuhle Wampe' is directed by Slatan Dudow with a screenplay by Bertolt Brecht, and was banned by Hitler upon his rise to power in 1933. The plot concerns the eviction of Anni (Hertha Thiele) and her family at the height of the Depression, and their enforced residence at the Kuhle Wampe camp for the dispossessed. The 68-minute film is followed by critic Andrew Hoellering's 48-minute video essay.
