Louis Malle's war-time drama was nominated for the Best Foreign Film Oscar and picked up the Best Film award at the BAFTAs. A young French peasant (Pierre Blaise) sees a chance for social advancement by joining the Gestapo during the French Occupation. However, his position is placed under threat when he starts dating the daughter of a Jewish tailor - a liaison that could have disastrous repercussions for them both.
