Silent era classic based on Emile Zola's novel of the same name. Set in Paris, it is a story of intrigue, greed, decadence, corruption and scandal, where business dealings and amorous deceit combine. Business tycoon Saccard (Pierre Alcover) sets up a publicity stunt to raise capital for his failing bank. The plan involves a flight across the Atlantic to drill for oil. Hamelin (Henry Victor) is the unwitting pilot Saccard chooses for the flight, much to the dismay of Hamelin's wife, Line (Marie Glory). While Hamelin is away, Saccard tries to seduce Line. The temptation of money puts Line and her husband in danger, pawns in a game played by unscrupulous speculators.
