A gymnasium for the mind, music stimulates more areas of the brain than just about any activity. So what is it like to not be able to hear, when music is central to your life? This film explores the lives of three people who are deaf or partially deaf, and how they are able to perform against the odds. A music reviewer by trade, the sudden loss of his hearing in one ear, and tinnitus, has made Nick have to relearn how to listen to music. Meningitis destroyed young Holly’s hearing at 14 months, to the devastation of her musician parents, but hasn’t stopped her from becoming an accomplished cellist and pianist. Meanwhile deaf dancer Emily has landed a place at a coveted European dance school. Director Lindsey Dryden, who herself is partially deaf, uses their stories to explore how the neuroscience of music reveals the wonders of the mind.
