Josef von Sternberg directs this film-noir starring Jane Russell and Robert Mitchum. While aboard a ship travelling to Macao, night club performer Julie Benson (Russell) befriends fellow passengers former serviceman Nick Cochran (Mitchum) and salesman Lawrence Trumble (William Bendix). Meanwhile, local crime boss Vincent Halloran (Brad Dexter) has been tipped off about the arrival of an American detective and, out of the three passengers, he believes Nick to be the most likely suspect. Halloran offers Julie a singing job at his casino in order to find out information on Nick but the situation quickly gets out of hand. Nick finds himself trapped by the gangster's cronies but has Halloran got the right man?
