Daniel Auteuil writes and directs this French romantic drama adapted from the first play in Marcel Pagnol's 'Marseilles Trilogy'. Set in the 1920s, the film also sees Auteuil star as César Olivier, the owner of a bar in the Old Port of Marseille. His son Marius (Raphaël Personnaz) has fallen for shellfish salesgirl Fanny (Victoire Bélézy) but is distracted by his dreams of setting sail and exploring far off lands. Meanwhile, despite her love for Marius, Fanny does not want to keep him from becoming a sailor and welcomes the attention of César's friend Panisse (Jean-Pierre Darroussin), a wealthly, older gentleman. This causes Marius to secure a position on the next boat due to sail out to sea. Will the young lovers be separated forever?
