In part two of Mark Donskoi's trilogy, based on the life of the famous Russian author, Maxim Gorky (Alexei Lyarsky) has reached his teenage years and takes on a number of jobs: working on a River Volga ferry; acting as a servant in a large household; and undertaking an apprenticeship with ikon painters. Along the way he begins to read about the forces that have constructed his society and to draw his own conclusions from his experiences. Preceded by 'My Childhood' (1938) and followed by 'My Universities' (1940).
