National Theatre: Collaborators Film Poster

National Theatre play following the struggles of Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov to write a play for Joseph Stalin. Bulgakov (Alex Jennings), who would later find fame with 'The Master and Margarita', a posthumously released novel which defies the oppressive regime under which he lived, faced a difficult balancing act when asked to write a play about Russian Dictator Stalin (Simon Russell Beale) in the 1930s. Retaining the favour of Stalin was essential to his survival, however his identity and self-respect as an artist demanded he refrain from obsequiousness. The artist faces a desperate internal and external struggle as the date of the play's performance - Stalin's 60th birthday - approaches.
