Edmund Goulding directs this 1940s film noir starring Tyrone Power and Joan Blondell. Confidence trickster Stanton Carlisle (Power) finds a way to cheat fellow carnival act Mademoiselle Zeena (Blondell) into teaching him the special code she uses in order to convince punters she has mind-reading abilities. Later he and new wife Molly (Coleen Gray) leave the carnival and, working alongside psychologist Lilith Ritter (Helen Walker) who divulges secrets about her patients, Stanton begins making money as a spiritualist. However, the scheme doesn't last long and soon Stanton finds himself turning to alcohol to cope with his now dire circumstances...
