Nine Days and Nights of Ed Sheeran Film Poster

On the ninth night, it’s believed the deceased’s ghost or spirit, or ‘duppy’ in Jamaican patois, leaves their body at midnight, so then the burial can take place the next day. This film explores the fascinating Caribbean tradition of Nine Nights, the time from a person’s passing to their funeral. It’s an uplifting, joyous, jubilant celebration of feasting, singing, dancing and playing games, bringing together friends, family, neighbours and colleagues. As the film shows, a loved one’s passing is one of the most social and celebratory events in a Caribbean’s life. As humorous, upbeat and intriguing as it is poignant and emotional, Nine Nights is a must-see for everyone, not just the Caribbean community. This screening is part of the SKN Heritage pop-up museum's 'Stories in a Suitcase – The Windrush Generation', taking place 12pm - 6pm on both the 21st and 22nd May, Upstairs at the Ritzy. An exhibition exploring what the Caribbean ‘Windrush Generation’ brought with them to the UK. Interactive exhibition: 12pm - 6pm / Screening & Discussion: 3pm Free entry TEXT Visit: Upstairs Facebook Page
