When slow-witted Joey (Tim Roth) is released from prison after serving a six-year sentence for murder and robbery, he is taken in by older brother Tommy (James Russo) and his wife Lorrain (Deborah Kara Unger). Lorrain is initially reluctant to have a criminal living in her home, but comes to realise that Joey is hard-working and honest. Meanwhile, Tommy is in debt to his drug supplier, and attempts to involve Joey in his deals. Lorrain begins to suspect that Tommy was in fact responsible for the crimes for which Joey went to prison.
