American drama in which a doctor must fight prejudices while saving a patient's life. When two brothers are admitted to hospital after they are shot during a struggle with police, Dr Brooks (Sidney Poitier) attempts to tend to their injuries. But being the only African-American doctor working in the hospital, he is the victim of racism from not only his patients but the wider community. When one of the patients dies during a routine procedure that Dr Brooks carries out, chaos ensues as the patient's brother, Ray (Richard Widmark) claims that his death was intentional and attempts to incite a riot. Can Dr Brooks prove his innocence and help put an end to burgeoning racial tensions?
