Four-year-old Ponette (Victoire Thivisol who won Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival) can not come to terms with the death of her mother in a car crash. Her confusion is exacerbated when her father goes on a business trip and leaves her in the care of her aunt in a remote mountain village. The community rallies around Ponette in order to lift her out of her depression, but she refuses to come out of her self-immersed world.
