Pursued Film Poster

In turn-of-the-century New Mexico the orphaned Jeb Rand (Robert Mitchum) is raised by adoptive parents who seem to hold a deep-seated grudge against him. Only his stepsister Thorley (Teresa Wright) offers him any affection, but when he returns from service in the Spanish-American war, he is forced into a confrontation with his brother (John Rodney), which sets in motion a chain of events which reveals the deadly secret behind the family's hatred for him. Lensed by James Wong Howe, this is an unusual generic mix of 'film noir', family melodrama and Western with Mitchum giving a superb performance as the man haunted and oppressed by a seemingly pre-determined fate.
