In 1916, Alvin C. York (Gary Cooper) is a simple farmer, in love with Gracie Williams (Joan Leslie) and struggling to hold onto his land. When his rifle is struck by lightning, York takes it as a sign from God, and becomes a pacifist. However, his attempts to avoid conscription for World War One are unsuccessful. Once serving in France, York holds firm to his religious beliefs, but still manages to become a war hero.
