Drama set in 1920s Ireland in which a young man drawn unwittingly into the IRA's fight for independence falls in love with a British girl kidnapped by the group. Medical student Kerry O'Shea (Don Murray) initially sees no reason to get involved in the increasingly violent struggle against the British occupiers of Ireland. However, when he uses his medical skills to assist an injured friend he finds himself in trouble with the British and left with little choice but to join the IRA, under the tutelage of his former professor, the unpredictable Sean Lenihan (James Cagney). Kerry appears set to follow Lenihan along the path to violent extremism, but will his feelings for the kidnapped Jennifer Curtis (Dana Wynter) force him to reconsider?
