Love illicitly blossoms between local girl Lucile (Michelle Williams) and German officer Bruno (Matthias Schoenaerts) after the Wehrmacht rolls into a small country town during the early days of the Nazi Occupation. Their affair constantly runs the risk of discovery - particularly by Lucile's shrewish mother-in-law Kristin Scott Thomas - as the town becomes a hotbed of class-based betrayal and score-settling under German rule. Director Saul Dibb's efficient adaptation of Irene Nemirovsky's unfinished novel brings a darker tone to a story that's not just one of forbidden romance.
