When homeless deaf-mute Carl Anderson (Liam Neeson) is arrested on a murder charge, Kathleen Riley (Cher) is the lawyer assigned to defend him. She begins searching for the real murderer and receives help from an unlikely source - a jury member named Eddie Sanger (Dennis Quaid) who has discovered evidence crucial to the case. Together Kathleen and Eddie start an investigation which begins amongst those dwelling on the margins of society and heads straight towards the power and corruption which lurks at its centre.
