In 1866 Josephine Monaghan, a young woman from a well-off New York family, has been thrown out by her father after becoming pregnant. With her baby son in the care of her sister Helen, Josephine heads out West with a pedlar. En route they are attacked by two soldiers and after escaping from them Josephine dresses as a man, cuts her hair short, a scar in her cheek and rides into Ruby City as Little Jo. From then on in the film explores the various hurdles that Jo faces in the Old West as she dresses as a man and tries to make it in a man's world.
