Hailee Steinfeld and Haley Lu Richardson star as high school best friends in this teenage American drama. Nadine Byrd (Steinfeld) is struggling through her teenage years and, though intelligent, finds it hard to fit in with her peers. Her junior year at high school gets off to a bad start after catching her best friend, Krista (Richardson) in bed with her older brother Darian (Blake Jenner). After forcing Krista to choose between her friendship and her brother, Nadine finds herself more alone than ever and turns to lunchtime visits with her teacher Mr. Bruner (Woody Harrelson) for comfort and guidance. With her mum (Kyra Sedgwick) perennially absent and her crush seemingly unaware she exists, Nadine begins to wonder if there's any way she can make it through her teenage years when she finds herself opening up to her equally awkward classmate Erwin (Hayden Szeto). The film was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance By an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy Or Musical (Steinfeld).
