Pete Calder (Billy Crudup) and Big Boy Matson (Woody Harrelson) meet for the first time in New Mexico during the 1930s, when Big Boy buys a horse from Pete. They become friends, and after fighting side-by-side in World War Two, they return to America and set up a ranch together.
