During the Irish Civil War of 1922, the brutish Gypo Nolan (Victor McLaglen) is desperate for money. In love with Margot, a prostitute, Gypo wishes to emigrate to America, but needs ten pounds to do so. He decides to inform on rebel Frankie McPhillip (Wallace Ford) in order to obtain the twenty pounds reward and secure his and Margot's future happiness, but finds himself troubled by his conscience. John Ford won one of the film's four Oscars for his direction, with Victor McLaglen winning Best Actor.
