Synopsis

Italian police officer Salvo D'Acquisto continues with his duties in the later years of the Second World War as the country falls under German occupation. When an accidental explosion kills two soldiers, the Nazis threaten to murder 20 civilians if the culprit is not found - and Salvo realises the only way to stop the massacre is to confess to the crime himself.
