1950s film noir adapted from the play by Bartlett Cormack and starring Robert Mitchum. Gangster Nick Scanlon (Robert Ryan) has successfully bribed a number of the city's police and government officials, including District Attorney Welch (Ray Collins) and Detective Sergeant Turk (William Conrad), allowing him to continue his crooked ways unscathed. However, Scanlon has been unable to corrupt Captain Thomas McQuigg (Mitchum), who is determined to put a stop to all the criminal activity in the city with the help of witness Irene Hayes (Lizabeth Scott). But can McQuigg succeed without endangering Irene and his remaining trustworthy officers?
