The Scent Of Mandarin Film Poster

Part of the 24th FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL UK: L'Odeur de la Mandarine During World War I, a home care nurse treats a man who lost one leg on the front lines. A strong bond arises between them and evolves into a passionate love affair. In the final months of the Great War, cavalry officer Charles (Olivier Gourmet) contemplates his future after losing his leg in battle. Angèle (Georgia Scalliet) is his home-care nurse, recently widowed by the continuing conflict. After Angèle accepts Charles' proposal of marriage without passion, their own battle begins as they come to terms with their fate. A frank empathy comes across throughout, from the earthily shot sequences of Charles re-learning to ride his beloved horses to the evocative physicality of Angèle and Charles' intimate love scenes. Scalliet is remarkable, drawing out the strong feminist elements that pervade the film, and playing against familiar face Gourmet with spark and intelligence. With a military inflected score by regular Legrand collaborator Armand Amar, this is a striking reflection on the Great War. (Subtitles) France 2015 Gille Legrand 110m
