A tale of amour fou against the backdrop of the French Revolution. Jean-Paul Belmondo plays a rogueish exile returning to his native country in order to help the revolutionary cause, and to seek a divorce from his wife (Marlene Jobert). She, meanwhile, has joined the side of the Loyalists, whilst being pursued by two other lovers. Belmondo finds himself falling for her all over again, despite their dangerously different political views.
