Volume 11 of the documentary series concentrates on the contrasting environments in which soldiers on both sides found themselves fighting. In part one, the war in the North African desert is analysed, from the initially successful operations of the German Afrika Korps to their total defeat at the hands of General Montgomery's British Eighth Army. Part two looks at the so-called 'forgotten war' in Burma, as the Japanese push the British to the gates of India, and as the British under General Slim prepare for their counter-attack.
