Racing driver Jean-Louis Duroc (Jean-Louis Trintignant) is distraught when his wife commits suicide. During a visit to his son's boarding school, Duroc meets another widowed parent - script girl Anne Gauthier (Anouk Amie). A love affair develops after Duroc gives Anne a lift home, although the spectre of her late husband hangs over their relationship. Claude Leloch's slick film was a huge hit, an Oscar winner and blasted one of the most recognisable theme tunes in movie history. A sequel was made twenty years on with the same director, cast and signature tune.
