Classic Hollywood adaptation of Tolstoy's novel. Fredric March is the dashing young Prince Dmitri who is in love with Anna Sten, a servant girl he has grown up with. After two years in national service Dimitri returns and they attend Easter Mass together. Afterwards Dmitri seduces her, only to slip away the next morning, leaving Katusha pregnant. The child dies and is buried in an unmarked grave by Katusha. Seven years pass and Dmitri finds himself a juror on a trial involving a prostitute charged with murder. It transpires that Katusha is the accused prostitute and although is innocent and despite Dmitri's efforts to free her - mocked now by her - Katusha is sent to Siberia. Overcome by love and guilt Dmitri decides he must pay for all the suffering he has caused Katusha and gives up all his land and possessions and joins Katusha on her long journey to Siberia.
