The story of Vietnam Prisoners of War Ernie Brace and John McCain and the friendship they formed by tapping code through the cell walls of Hanoi Hilton prison in the late 1960s. The pair did not meet face to face until an event at the White House in 1973. Brace was the longest-held American civilian prisoner, detained for nearly eight years. McCain would go on to become a US senator and contest the Republican nomination for president against George W Bush.
