Drama set in a shanty town in 1870s Yorkshire Dales, home to a diverse community of pioneers, settlers and outcasts building a railway viaduct. Jessica Raine stars as penniless widow Annie Quaintain, who arrives with her teenage children and ends up setting up a boarding house for the labourers. But she is not the only new arrival in town. Handsome navvy Johnny is returning to his native Yorkshire from Africa - only to make violent enemies with a hot-tempered colleague. Hans Matheson, Clarke Peters, Daniel Rigby and Amy James-Kelly co-star.
Annie unwittingly allows railway detective Bamford, who is searching for Red Killeen, to get dangerously close to her family - and the secret they are desperate to keep buried. Charles holds a Whitsun fair, where a wrestling match threatens to expose Johnny as someone who had a hand in the missing man's disappearance, while Coates is also hiding something and goes to extreme lengths to prevent Bamford finding out the truth. Isabella makes Charles a startling offer to save the viaduct. Period drama, starring Jessica Raine, Mark Addy, Hans Matheson, Daniel Rigby, Clarke Peters and Jeany Spark.
Coates now has the reins of Jericho firmly in his grasp, but in a bid to protect the inhabitants from rogue traders, he makes fierce enemies - which threatens to have grave consequences. Martha's condition gets worse, leading to panic among the townsfolk as the fever spreads, while Annie struggles to get her daughter to a doctor. Charles and Isabella agree to put their troubled relationship behind them and focus on raising capital for the viaduct - only for a ghost from Charles's past to come knocking on his door. Period drama, starring Jessica Raine, Clarke Peters, Daniel Rigby, Jeany Spark and Amy James-Kelly.
Johnny feels increasingly isolated as news of his true identity spreads like wildfire through the town, with Coates viewing him as a rival and even Annie keeping her distance. Meanwhile, as Charles faces financial ruin he is forced to go to wealthy preacher Jonas Sorsby, but when Annie discovers an ugly truth about the new investor, she takes matters into her own hands - only to find herself in a dangerous situation. Period drama, starring Jessica Raine, Hans Matheson, Clarke Peters, Daniel Rigby and David Westhead.
Another week of bridge-building - both literal and symbolic - as the Yorkshire-set frontier drama continues. Annie finally persuades George to move back home, although his presence threatens to bring a dark family secret back to the surface. As money for the viaduct begins to run out, Charles announces a delay to the wages, prompting the aggrieved navvy workforce to come out on strike. Johnny may hold the key to the problem - but it seems Isabella would rather he kept well away. Period drama, starring Jessica Raine, Hans Matheson, Daniel Rigby and Jeany Spark.
Charles arranges for stone to be quarried from a nearby site, and panic sets in for Annie and Johnny when they discover it is where the bodies of Happy Jack and Red are buried. The townsfolk are outraged at the thought of their old foreman's body being moved and rally round his widow Hatty, but she is won over by the promise of a decent headstone for his new grave, so Johnny takes charge of the exhumation, hoping he can prevent Red's body being discovered. Meanwhile, Isabella tells Charles she wants to be his wife in every sense, but when housemaid Epiphany lets something slip about her past, no one is prepared for the consequences.
Johnny is the prime suspect for the murder of Red Killeen, and despite a desperate plea from Annie, Charles washes his hands of his brother, leaving his fate in the hands of Coates, who has been gunning for the man they call `the Prince' almost from day one. With no real system of justice in Jericho, a hearing is set up in the Capsticks' tavern - but with the wrong man on trial, the angry townsfolk baying for blood and guilty George buckling under the pressure, Annie worries it won't be long until the truth is exposed.
In the aftermath of the trial, it seems nothing can hold back Annie and Johnny's relationship - and things are looking up for Jericho with the success of the new quarry. However, when the collapse of a mineshaft leaves both Blackwood brothers trapped and in danger, Coates is the only one man with the expertise to help - leaving Charles, Johnny and the future of the viaduct in his hands. Meanwhile, foreman Davey has suspicions that could have deadly consequences. Period drama, starring Jessica Raine, Hans Matheson, Daniel Rigby and Clarke Peters.
