Season 1 (2008)

The first series sees Laura working alongside Dorcas Lane at the post office in Candleford. Postwoman Mrs Macey (Claire Skinner) receives news that her husband Dan (Danny Webb) has escaped from prison. She fears the damage to her reputation will force her out of town. When local widower Old Amos (Peter Wight) announces his engagement to his maid Patty (Camille Coduri), gossips in the town suspect she may only be after his money. A stranger arrives in the town looking for his estranged daughters - who turn out to be Ruby and Pearl Pratt (Victoria Hamilton and Matilda Ziegler). The women must decide whether they can forgive him for deserting them when they needed him most. A new post office inspector (Ben Daniels) catches Dorcas off guard when he starts to unearth anomalies. Robert (Brendan Coyle) takes pity on a homeless family, and Twister (Karl Johnson) starts seeing visions of his dead sister. The residents rally around Susan Braby (Nicola Stephenson) when they realise her husband Sam (Nigel Harman) has hit her. The radical views of teacher Mr Delafield (Stephen Campbell-Moore) raise plenty of eyebrows, the rivalry between Alf (John Dagleish) and Phillip (Oliver Jackson Cohen) continues, and tensions mount between Dorcas and Sir Tim (Ben Miles) as painful truths about the past begin to surface.

Season 2 (2009)

A Christmas special heralds the start of series two, with the residents being captivated by a barefoot girl called Cinderella Doe (Sheridan Smith) searching for a man no one has heard of. Lark Rise old boy James Dowland (Jason Merrells) arrives from London and puts Candleford on the map by opening a new hotel. The challenge of trying to make ends meet in Lark Rise proves too much for Robert and Emma Timmins (Claudie Blakley). Dorcas offers Emma a helping hand, and Minnie (Ruby Bentall) fears her past is catching up with her. Dorcas starts seeing James, Emma's father arrives for his birthday, and the path of true love does not run smoothly for Thomas (Mark Heap) and Miss Ellison (Sandy McDade).

Season 3 (2010)

The drama returns for a third series as young journalist Daniel Parish (Ben Aldridge) arrives in Lark Rise with exciting news for the Timmins family. Lark Rise becomes rife with talk of witchcraft at a time when the Bishop is due to arrive to consecrate the church font. Alf throws a party to celebrate moving into a cottage of his own. Help comes from an unlikely source when an epidemic hits at harvest time. Dorcas is fascinated by mysterious recluse Mr Reppington (Tom Conti), who has been hiding at the Golden Lion Hotel for months. Daniel is on the look out for a big story after opening a newspaper in Candleford. The locals are rehearsing for their annual production of St George and the Dragon when rumours swirl around that Sir Timothy has returned. Pearl is in a state of panic when she receives a dress-making commission which could save her ailing business because there is no way she can complete the work in time. Emma and Margaret become rivals for a schoolteacher role, and when local gossip Mrs Mullins (Rosie Cavaliero) discovers her daughter Emily (Jennie Jacques) is pregnant, she leaps to the conclusion that Daniel is the father, but Dorcas is determined to uncover the truth. Fisher Bloom (Matthew McNulty) returns to win Laura back, throwing her feelings for Daniel into turmoil. When the postmaster at Inglestone tries to force Dorcas into selling up, she is faced with the prospect of losing her home.

Season 4 (2011)

The complete fourth season of the BBC historical drama series based on the autobiographical books by Flora Thompson. In this series, Gabriel Cochrane (Richard Harrington), the handsome and once-wealthy owner of a large iron foundry, is reduced to poverty and homelessness after the bankruptcy of his business and the death of his new wife. Moved by his plight, Dorcas (Julia Sawalha) offers him a job as a blacksmith and lodgings at the forge.
